Villanova di Ostuni: guided tour of the Mother's Caves

In the territory of Ostuni we will discover the dedication of the ancient peoples to the Madonna: Basilians, Byzantines and prehistoric cultures have dedicated their cults to the female figure, through a journey that will take us back in time:
We will leave from the Madonna del Mare, currently a nineteenth-century church built on a previous crypt, where the Madonna has always been venerated by sailors and fishermen.

The Madonna of the Byzantine devotion, the second leg of the path set in the ridge of a blade, is a treasure remained hidden until the nineteenth century, when it was discovered the natural cave and the ancient place of worship. Used in many historical periods, the rock cavity is covered with wall paintings and overlapping images and religious symbols, an unusual testimony to the evolution of the religious cult of the beginnings up to the Christian culture.
Finally, a Madonna guarded in a characteristic and unique place in the world for the presence of an apsidal Christian church and two crypts created in natural caves on two different levels, connected inside by a large staircase, symbolically associated with the "holy staircase" : 47 steps leading to purification.
It is planned to stop at the farm with tasting of extra virgin olive oil of organic production, accompanied by homemade bread, samples of local products and a glass of wine of native vines.
